Albuquerque Gems & Quirks

Albuquerque Gems & Quirks

The photo below features on of the true gems of Albuquerque architecture. The Floral Chapel has a beautiful Art Deco look seamlessly combined with classic southwestern adobe style. Straddling the border between the heart of downtown and the historic Barelas district on 3rd Street in Albuquerque, it is a timeless structure designed as a funeral chapel by the father of the current owner.

The simplicity of this building combined with perfectly executed adornments and architectural touches makes this one of my favorite buildings in all of Albuquerque.

There is a wellspring of artistic talent in Albuquerque. Many times you will see that talent expressed on murals such as this one I discovered a year ago on Bridge Street in the South Broadway neighborhood. The mural has since been painted over. Nevertheless, it was beautiful. I hope to see more work from this artist throughout the city!

I heartily agree that the historic Kimo Theater in downtown Albuquerque is “King of Its Kind.” It is also one-of-a-kind with a cheerful and colorful southwestern motif that seems to include every southwestern cultural icon known to man. That is part of its charm! With an architectural style named “Pueblo Deco” it has been faithfully restored and now serves as home to a variety of theatrical performances, movies, concerts.
