Albuquerque In The Fall
October 6, 2009Can you see why I love New Mexico? The subtle colors of fall paint a landscape at the Coronado National Monument just outside of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Although it is named for Vasquez de Coronado, who camped in the vicinity in 1540–1542, this archeological site is most noted for the ruins of Kuaua pueblo. The pueblo or village was settled about 1300 CE and abandoned toward the end of the 1500s CE. Kuaua was one of several Tiwa-speaking pueblos in the area when the conquistador Vasquez de Coronado arrived, and the village was almost certainly abandoned due to the after effects of the Tiguex War (February 1541). This photo captured with a Canon Rebel XT and kit lens.
Albuquerque Desert Colors
October 6, 2009If you think the desert is boring, come visit Albuquerque, New Mexico. When the New Mexico sun illuminates the desert flora of Albuquerque, beauty happens. This photo shows a view near the Coronado State Monument just outside of Albuquerque. Coronado State Monument where Francisco Vásquez de Coronado—with 300 soldiers and 800 Indian allies from New Spain—entered the valley while looking for the fabled Seven Cities of Gold. Instead he found villages inhabited by prosperous native people. Coronado’s party camped near the Tiwa pueblo of Kuaua, one of the many villages encountered by the explorers. Photo captured with Nikon D40 and 18-55mm lens.
