I spent many pleasant afternoons in the Rio Grande Botanic Garden in Albuquerque photographing flowers and plants. There is something calming and restorative about being in a beautiful garden, and the Rio Grande Botanic Garden is as beautiful as they come in Albuquerque, New Mexico! This collection of photos, captured on film, are from a year’s worth of captures during my stay in Albuquerque. Hope you enjoy them. If you are ever Albuquerque, be sure to stop by the Rio Grande Botanic Garden! Filed under Flower Photos, Albuquerque Photos. Click on the thumbnails pics to see the images of each flower then select the page number to view more flowers.

Photo: Yellow Daisies at the Rio Grande Botanic Garden

This is a close-up of yellow daisies seen in the Rio Grande Botanic Garden in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It reflects one of my favorite techniques in flower photography: Using the colors of adjacent flowers to create blurred colors (bokeh) in the background. The blurred pink colors in the background are others flowers intentionally out of focus (by using a large aperture) to create a pleasing background for the foreground flowers.

Camera: Nikon D40, Nikon 55-200mm VR lens, Nikon 3T Close-Up Diopter.

Flower close-up photo collection shot with Nikon D40

This is a collection of flower photo close-ups shot with a Nikon D40 about 2 years ago. I used the Nikon 55-200mm VR lens for all of these photos. I also used  a Nikon 3T close-up diopter for some of the closer shots. Some readers have asked me how they can find a Nikon 3T close-up diopter. They turn up occasionally on Ebay.com used. From what I can tell they have been discontinued by Nikon for quite a while, so finding one can be a challenge. If you do find one (it should be for less than $50) grab it! They are the perfect companion for the Nikon 55-200mm lens for getting sharp close-ups (with a foot or less) of flowers with a beautiful bokeh (blurred background).

Photo: Flowers on Film Web Site

This web site: The Flowers of Albuquerque, features a number of photos of flowers captured on film stock from my early days as a photographer. All of these photos were captures using negative film (most often Kodak Ultracolor 400) in a series of Minolta film SLR’s (Minolta XRT, X-700, XG-A). I shot these with a variety of lenses purchased used on Ebay.com, including the outstanding Minolta 50mm F1.4 lens. The negatives were scanned with a Nikon Coolscan V, and edited in Photoshop.

Many of my best flower close-up photos are shot on negative film. In outdoor settings negative film easily captures the dynamic range and color of flowers in a way that is not quite matched with the best of digital today. Looking at my old photos shot on film creates a yearning to go back to the medium, especially for flower macros . . . Let me know what you think of these photos. Each page has four clickable thumbnails that link to a new flower photo. Enjoy!
