Photo: Route 66 near Sedillo, New Mexico, Old Gas Station

This photo was captured during one of my first explorations of Route 66 in New Mexico four years ago. This car sits near an old dilapidated gas station in Sedillo, New Mexico. There had been a good rain. The sun peeped through the clouds, providing perfect illumination for this setting. I could not ask for a better Route 66 moment!

This photo, captured along Route 66 near Acoma, New Mexico speaks of the joy of quiet stretches of Route 66 passing through simple towns from Albuquerque to Grants, New Mexico. The lone pick-up truck along a quiet stretch of rural road is for me the quintessential New Mexico setting!

Photo: Horses along Route 66 near Albuquerque, New Mexico

It is quite common to see wild horses in New Mexico grazing on stretches of open land along Route 66 between Albuquerque and Grants, New Mexico. Indeed, they are one of the most significant reminders of the cowboy and ranching heritage of New Mexico. The wild horses that have survived on the New Mexican range are a genetic and historic remnant of the Old West. The characteristics that were important in the Old West days are still found in our wild horses and burros: strength, endurance, and reliability. They are medium to heavy boned, carry themselves in a collected manner, and are surefooted over rough terrain. Adopters find gentled wild horses to be a smooth ride, capable of performing all day, and burros are reliable pack and companion animals. Their only natural predator is the mountain lion. In order to maintain the wild horse population at ecologically sustainable levels, the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act was passed, unanimously, through Congress and signed by former President Nixon on December 15, 1971. It became Public Law 92-195, which protects wild horses and burros within designated territories on both Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management lands.

Unfortunately, these photos are part of an extensive collection for which I no longer have the original digital files due to a hard drive crash. As a result, they are not available for sale. Thankfully, I still have these small images that I created for the Web! All photos by Donald Peterson - Newark1 Web Design Portfolio

Photo: Arizona Sand Drag Sign on Arizona Farm, Route 66

Having lived on the east coast (New York City) I had no clue what a sand drag is when I came upon this beautiful rural setting on old Route 66 near Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona. Although I was eager to make it to Flagstaff (Arizona) before sundown, I had to stop and capture this beautiful light and setting. I’m glad I did! This is one of my favorite images captured on the road. This area, near the Arizona, New Mexico border has striking expanses of flat land. The Petrified Forest is a must see if you are in this area as well.

Camera: Nikon D40, Tamron 70-300mm lens, tripod. I shot from the side of the road near my car, and used the lens to zoom in. I am very careful not to trespass on private property when shooting this type of photo.
