These three Phoenix Arizona (AZ) Photos show the range of beauty seen in Papago Park, in Phoenix, Arizona. Looking more like a distant planet’s terrain than an urban space, it is a desert park in the full sense of the word. From imposing red rock buttes to appealing fishing lagoons it is a delightful if oddly adorned city park. In these three photos you see a dust storm, a setting sun, and a winter visitor to this Phoenix park. Photos by Donald Peterson.

Photo: Jemez Mountains Red Rock, New Mexico, An Impending Storm
This photo shows the handsome red rock of the Jemez Mountains, New Mexico with the incoming dark clouds of an impending storm. The dark clouds add drama and color to the Jemez landscape! For me, the biggest danger as a photographer was standing in an open field with a metal tripod and camera as lightning and thunder came closer. Needless to say, I did not test myself against the elements . . . No photo is worth that! This photo was captured with my favorite camera, the Nikon D40.
After The Storm Near Acoma, New Mexico

Photo: Acoma, New Mexico Landscape
This photo is from one of the most enjoyable days I’ve had shooting in New Mexico. In the space of an hour, I had seen a dramatic storm, a stunning rainbow, and clearing skies rich in color and clean, joyous light. This scene, from a ranch near Acoma, New Mexico, shows lovely post-storm light adorning a quietly beautiful New Mexico landscape. Of course, what this image cannot convey is the crisp, clean air and the gentle breezes of that moment . . . The best things in life are free!
This view is from the old Route 66 that runs parallel to Interstate 40 in New Mexico. Route 66 in this area has quiet landscape vistas and relics from the heyday of “The Mother Road.”
I will soon be offering prints of my favorite photos at very reasonable prices. Please check back soon for this new addition!
After The Storm in Papago Park

Photo: Papago Park After Storm, Phoenix, Arizona

Photo: Papago Park Fishing Lagoon After Storm, Phoenix, Arizona
The more landscape photography I do, the more I come to realize the overwhelming importance light has in the creation of a good photo. Waiting for the right light can make all the difference. I waited about 45 minutes for a light rainstorm to subside (took a quick nap in the process, nice . . .) before getting out of my car, and seeing the sun break through the clouds. Due to it being late in the day, the light in Papago Park, (Phoenix, Arizona) was warm and rich. It was also beautifully softened by the heavy cloud cover. I ran around trying to capture as many compositions as I could before sunset. Here are two photos from this visit. Follow the light and you will have much more expressive and colorful photos!
I love the fact that you can repeatedly visit the same place and always have different light conditions to work with. In fact, notice how different an earlier photo of this Papago Park location feels due to changes in the light. Both are after-storm photos but look quite different!
