This photo shows an immature White Egret in a fishing lagoon at Papago Park, Phoenix, Arizona. The lagoons are stocked with catfish and trout so the egret is certain to find a meal! Captured with Nikon D40, 55-200mm VR lens at 800 ISO.

A photo of a Northern Pintail Duck in a fishing lagoon in Papago Park, Phoenix, Arizona during the past winter.

Northern Pintails are a medium sized dabbling duck. They are distinguished from other dabbling ducks by their slim profile, elegant neck and pointed tail. Drakes have a chocolate brown head and white neck and under-parts. The long, central tail feathers are black while the others are grey with a white margin. Speculum is iridescent green or green-black. Hens can be identified from other dabbling hens by their slender body, pointed tail, mottled dull brown or bronze speculum and mottled to spotted dark grey to black bill. Upper body feathers are dark brown while the lower body feathers are a lighter, spotted buff or grey. Photo captured with Nikon D40 and Nikon 55-200mm VR lens. Photo: Northern Pintail, Papago Park, Phoenix, Arizona

This is a photo of a handsome Northern Pintail Duck on the blue gold waters of a fishing lagoon in Papago Park, Phoenix, Arizona. It is a good example of the secret to good photography. Buy the best equipment you can afford, stop worrying about it, and focus on the artistic merits of your work. This photo was captured with the Nikon D40, one of the cheapest DSLR’s on the market and a budget priced Nikon 55-200mm VR lens. The camera and lens are very capable tools. However, it was only by waiting for the right light, looking for artistic reflections in the water and careful composition decisions that a photo like this is produced. I could have captured this scene using any modern digital camera and similar lens. Photography has a learning curve. Understanding light, shadow and composition and using those to make an interesting photo takes time to learn. You hinder that learning process by fixating on equipment. Stop worrying about how sharp your lens is . . . Take some photos! Purchase a 11×14 Special Edition Print of “Northern Pintail, Blue Gold Waters” using the “Add To Cart” button below. Photo: Grey Heron in Papago Park, Phoenix, Arizona

The beautiful Grey Heron was stalking for prey in a fishing lagoon in Papago Park, Phoenix, Arizona. This is the most dangerous predator the local ducks have as they feed on the newly hatched chicks. This is the first time I’ve noticed the plaited strand of white and blue feathers that run along the neck of the Grey Heron. This particular bird is quite used to humans and will allow you to get pretty close if you move slowly and keep low.
